Airlangga Shows Off Electric Vehicles in RI, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto revealed electric vehicles in Indonesia until 2024. Interestingly, the population of electric vehicles in Indonesia has now reached hundreds of thousands of units.
It is recorded that until April 2024, the population of electric vehicles in Indonesia has reached 133,225 units. In more detail, electric motorbikes have a larger population, reaching 109,576 units, while electric cars reach 23,238 units. The rest are electric-based commercial vehicles.
This population has increased from year to year, such as in 2019 the number was only 1,437 units. Increasing in 2020 with a total of 3,894 units and increasing again in 2021 with a total of 15,883 units.
The surge in the population of electric vehicles in Indonesia was most felt in 2022, in that year the population reached 41,743 units. Then in the four months of this year, the population also skyrocketed to 133,225 units.

Airlangga said he hopes this population can continue to increase so that it can encourage cleaner air in Indonesia.
“Hopefully electric vehicles can continue to increase and encourage environmentally friendly vehicles. Green transportation policies are also important, especially public transportation,” said Airlangga.
Airlangga believes that public transportation that relies on electric vehicles cannot be implemented in all regions. So far, only Jakarta has experienced a change in public transportation based on electricity.
“Well, if we look at it, DKI buses are more progressive than other regions. Of course, I hope that other regions can also follow DKI soon so that mass transportation also uses electric vehicles,” said Airlangga.
It should be noted that the growth of the electric vehicle population in Indonesia continues to experience a fairly high spike. Based on Gaikindo data, in August 2024 alone, thousands of electric cars were recorded as having been sold to consumers.
Currently, the largest contributor of electric cars in Indonesia is BYD Seal with a contribution of 1,251 units. Followed by its sibling, Atto 3, which sold 992 units in August 2024.
Trailing the two BYD cars, the Chery Omoda E5 is in third place. Chery distributed 449 units of the Omoda E5 to its dealers.
Filling the fourth position is BYD Dolphin with 416 units.
Next in fifth place is Wuling Air ev with a distribution record of 404 units in the eighth month of this year. Wuling Cloud EV also filled the sixth position with 340 units.
Meanwhile, in electric motorcycles, sales are experiencing a decline in September 2024. This was revealed by one of the local electric motorcycle manufacturers, namely Polytron. They admitted that sales are currently declining because the government’s electric motorcycle subsidy quota has run out.
