Porsche will only manufacture 2,500 units of the Porsche 911 Dakar for the whole world and, as we have already told you, this off-road fun will not be exactly cheap: its price starts at 256,042 euros. A figure that can increase if we want our unit to look like the models of the eighties: The Rally package, which includes (among other elements) this two-tone bodywork, adds another 30,000 euros to that figure. And now we know the reason that justifies such a figure.
The Porsche 911 Dakar is a tribute to the role that the German brand has had in the world of rallies. As a result, it offers an option to customize the body that reproduces the classic Rothmans paint scheme worn by some of the models that participated in the Dakar in the eighties. The same ones that have served as inspiration for this version.
A 16 hour job
This customization includes finishing in two tone, details such as red and gold stripes, white wheels, the word ‘Roughroads’ on the doors and the possibility of choosing a competition number between 0 and 900. To this we must add, inside, some black seats with belts Shark Blue security and details in a tone named Ceramic.
The exterior paint job is truly special: not only because of its appearance, but also because of the entire work process in which a part is carried out by Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur, the brand’s personalization division. the companions of Engine1 they asked Porsche about it at the Los Angeles Auto Show and were told that, in order to carry out this customization, 16 hours are needed… in addition to the 18 needed to shape the 911 Dakar. If we add to this all the artisan operations that it implies, perhaps we better understand the reason for the 30,000 euros.
a craft work
It all starts in front of a Porsche 911 Dakar whose bodywork is painted white: it is sprayed with a clear coat and sanded as a previous step to protect the parts that are not going to go blue. In this way, they prepare him to receive the Gentian Blue Metallic that is applied manually. When everything is dry, the coating is removed and two additional clear coats are added: all these steps take Porsche workers 7.5 hours to complete.
Once this phase is over, the bodywork of the Porsche 911 Dakar heads to the production line for assembly, but this is not the end of the customization process. Once finished, it is the turn of the Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur: they are in charge of place, by hand, all the red and gold stripes which complete the Rothmans livery. This requires partial disassembly of the body, which adds another 8.5 hours to the manufacturing process. Once the car is put back together, a final inspection is carried out and sent to the dealer. If you do the math, this process alone involves two days of work (as long as the workday is eight hours).
