Nurburgring. Nordschleife. One of the world meccas for motorsports and motor fans. A magical place of pilgrimage and for years, a true mine of digital content, largely derived from multiple lap record attempts – in all the disciplines and subcategories you want to imagine. However, in 2018, Porsche slammed its fist on the table and broke a record that had been unbeaten and undefeated for 35 years. The absolute record back. And she beat it for over a minute, making automotive history.
Of all the on-board laps you can watch, none is going to be as absolutely crazy as this one. Stefan Bellof’s 1983 record was 6 minutes and 11 seconds, and was achieved with a Porsche 956. Porsche waited until 2018 to break the record again, with a Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo developed for endurance racing, but specially modified for this record. With Timo Bernhard at his controls, signed a time of only 5 minutes and 19 seconds. A record that may never be broken again. A real barbarity.
It is not playing at double speed. We promise you.
The on-board video of the lap record is surreal. It looks like any video played at double speed. The way the car shreds through corners is unreal, and the way it picks up speed is hard to believe – thanks to the hybrid power assist. Car It exceeds 300 km/h in many areas and on the finish line it touches 370 km/h, only limited by its final development. It’s a video that you can’t just watch once, and it reminds us that there are two kinds of human beings: professional pilots… and the rest.
