This is how the DGT will reward you with up to 16 card points, every two years, starting in 2023

In recent days we have spoken to you at great length about one of the great innovations that the General Directorate of Traffic will introduce from 2023. The DGT will comply with one of the promises that it has been anticipating for years and with a plan that should result in improving the training of drivers and motorcyclists, who in return will be rewarded with two points on the license for completing different driving courses. safe and efficient.

During this time, some readers have transmitted their doubts to us. Participation in a safe and efficient driving course will entail a bonus of two points from the license for completing the training. And you can receive a bonus of two points for each course every two years.

However, How many points can we obtain in total by participating in the safety and efficiency courses promoted by the DGT?

As of 2023, the DGT will reward safe and efficient driving courses with two points

DGT course regulations

To analyze the limit of card points that we can obtain by participating in safe and efficient driving courses, we must refer to Article 63, on the allocation of points, of the Law on Traffic and Road Safetywhere it is established that:

5. Passing the safe and efficient driving courses referred to in Annex VIII, provided that the established requirements are met and there is a positive balance, will compensate with two additional points up to a maximum of fifteen points and with a frequency maximum of one course of each type every two years

So that We will not only be able to obtain two points every two years, but two points for each type of course every two years.. And what types of course will be available?

There will be courses for car drivers and motorcyclists, and focused on urban and highway driving

Types of course promoted by the DGT

To date, the General Directorate of Traffic has established courses for different types of vehicles, which will initially be two, passenger cars and mopeds/motorcycles. It has also established that there will be safe and efficient driving courses on the highway and in urban areas. So we would have a total of four courses:

  1. Safe and efficient driving course of passenger cars in urban areas
  2. Safe and efficient driving course for passenger cars on the road
  3. Safe and efficient driving course for mopeds/motorcycles in urban areas
  4. Safe and efficient driving course for mopeds/motorcycles on the road

As the standard is defined, and the courses are expected to be defined, we could take 4 different courses that, recovering two points every two years for each of them, would allow us to recover up to 8 card points every two years.

At this point it is important to remember that the courses will consist of a theoretical and a practical part, with a total duration of at least six hours and that they may be taught in one or two sessions. As the courses for mopeds and motorcycles are being defined, the distribution of the six hours would be 1 hour and 45 minutes of theory, including half an hour of conclusions, and 4 hours and 15 minutes of practical training. The courses may be taught in a continuous session, or in two sessions.

And to participate in these courses, obviously, It will be necessary that we have the permit that enables us to drive the course vehicle and the relevant skills to complete the tests (for example, slalom in cones, braking…).

Six different courses have already been defined for mopeds and motorcycles, which with the passenger car courses would add a total of 8 and, therefore, 16 the points that we could recover in two years

Up to 8 different course types

But as we will see below, and while waiting for the requirements and the definitive management of the courses to be defined, which will come with a Traffic instruction, the number of different courses in which we could participate could reach up to 8 and, Thus, we could potentially recover up to 16 card points every two years (remember that Points can be recovered up to a maximum of 15). And it is that the two courses for safe and efficient driving of passenger cars in urban areas and highways will be joined by six different courses for mopeds and motorcycles that have already been defined.

According to the latest update of the DGT course certification for safe and efficient driving on motorcycles and mopeds There will be six types of course, in addition to the two tourism courses:

  1. Safe and efficient driving courses for two-wheeled mopeds in urban areas: AM permit
  2. Safe and efficient driving courses for motorcycles up to 125 cm3 in urban areas: A1 permit
  3. Safe and efficient driving courses for motorcycles over 125 cm3 in urban areas: permit A2 or A
  4. Safe and efficient motorcycle driving courses on conventional roads for A1 permit
  5. Safe and efficient motorcycle driving courses on conventional roads for A2 permit
  6. Safe and efficient motorcycle driving courses on conventional roads for A permit

We insist that we will have to wait for the final wording of the certifications of the courseswho are working at the moment Y also to the publication of the instruction of the DGT to start the courses, whose trainers will receive accreditation to teach them in January.

As the standard has been defined, and while waiting for the courses to begin, everything indicates that this will be the option that many drivers will choose to increase their balance of points, as an alternative to the points recovery courses.
