After the Dakars and Sterrato, Maserati flirts with the idea of an MC20 prepared for off-roading

A new era has begun in the supercar segment. We talk about the crossover supercars, a fashion that already has two models for sale in the form of the Porsche 911 Dakar and Lamborghini Huracan Sterrato, but which could soon be extended to more cars. And from Italy we get a interesting off-road proposal based on the Maserati MC20a prototype that is now presented to us in conceptual form but that getting the green light could be on the streets sooner than you think.

In November 2020, the Maserati Fuoriserie division presented us with a peculiar idea called Maserati MC20 “Gatto delle Nevi”. That design exercise was nothing more than a trial balloon, a peculiar idea about what it could be like to reimagine the MC20 in a crossover keythus giving life to a type of supercar that is now defended by the new 911 Dakar and Huracan Sterrato.

But the curious thing about this project is that Maserati has once again remembered it on its networks, also doing so accompanied by a new aesthetic and a new light blue color. That is, for the second time Maserati flirts again with the idea of putting an improved MC20 on the streets to drive off-roadmaking special mention of driving on snow and hence its particular nickname “Gatto delle Nevi”.

Maserati has not ruled on the possibility of manufacturing an MC20 capable of competing with the Dakar and Sterratobut if it does, it could be very similar to these renders that accompany this post. Creating an MC20 crossover would not be excessively complex, as it would require a specific suspension with greater ground clearance, mixed tires, underbody protections and revision of electronic controls. Older people would also introduce an aesthetic review.

The problem with getting involved in such a project lies in the uncertainty surrounding this new segmentWell, although Porsche and Lamborghini have launched into this new category with a good number of firm reservations, it is not so clear that the market will respond with high demand for this new way of understanding supercars. That being said, the weather balloon has already been launched, so if Maserati gets enough interested customers, let no one doubt that we will see an MC20 crossover.
