Almost 60% of drivers are exposed to a fine for not complying with this obligation

When the DGT gives us our driving license, as drivers we acquire a series of obligations that we must comply with. Ignoring them is punishable by different sanctions, which, depending on the case, can draw a hole of several hundred euros in our pocket. Today we deal with the case of a responsibility that 56% of drivers do not comply with… despite carrying a fine of 200 euros.

The objective of a Technical Inspection is to guarantee that each vehicle meets the minimum safety and environmental protection conditions for circulation. The DGT monitors that this is the case because the good condition of the vehicle’s safety elements is essential for reduce and eliminate accidents on our roads. In their last campaign they controlled 237,565 vehicles… and the results are far from ideal.

Vans and cars, in the spotlight

Of those 237,565 vehicles, 10,894 were penalized for different reasons, among which, especially, Not having a valid ITV: 56% of the complaints filed (6,137 in total) are due to this reason. Analyzing in detail the data from the General Directorate of Traffic, vans (65%) are the ones that incur the most this infraction, a figure not far removed from that of passenger cars: 61%. 28% of the trucks and 8.5% of the controlled buses did not have the inspection up to date either.

This is not the only recurring infraction: it is accompanied on the podium by complaints about the poor condition of the tires and those filed for not having the documentation: both the vehicle and the driver. Added to them are those related to license plates or lighting.

In the case of vans, trucks and buses, the conditioning of the load, the excess weight and the manipulation of the tachograph were also controlled. Finally, 92 vehicles were immobilized, since they did not meet the minimum guarantees for them to do so safely.

up to 500 euros

Articles 9 and 65 (point 4 and point 5 II) of the Road Safety Law (Royal Decree 339/1990 of March 2) establish the sanctions for those drivers who do not comply with the regulations related to ITV.

If a vehicle circulates with the inspection expired and is intercepted by the agents, they will revoke your driving license, they will give you a valid document only to take the car to an ITV station within ten days and they will fine you 200 euros (100 with prompt payment). It is the same punishment for those who drive a vehicle with an ITV whose result is unfavorable. If it is negative, the sanction will be a fine of 500 euros with no possibility of reducing this figure in half.

A matter of security

The Spanish Association of Collaborating Entities of the Administration in the Technical Inspection of Vehicles (AECA-ITV) emphasizes the importance of complying with the obligation to have the inspection always in force. And they do so by providing data: they ensure that these revisions prevent 723 fatalities per year, 13,100 injuries of varying degrees and 15,641 road accidents. They further add that If the vehicles that do not pass the ITV did so, 353 deaths, more than 11,640 injuries and 13,517 additional accidents would be avoided.
